A woman I mentor and coach was struggling.
She was unhappy at work, at a job she used to really like. She knew she needed to make a change, but she didn’t know what she wanted to do or where to start. She didn’t want to get a similar job in the same industry, but the idea of pivoting to something new was overwhelming.
She was stuck. And the uncertainty was making her anxious and worried.
Why We Come to a Crossroads Mid-Career
Most of us “fall” into our first jobs. We take what seems interesting, impressive, or simply what’s offered, and then we keep going.
But at some point, something shifts. Maybe you’ve outgrown your role. Maybe there was a big life change that shifted your priorities. Or maybe you’re in between jobs and realizing the old path no longer fits.
Whatever the reason, you feel stuck. You know you need a change, but you don’t know what that change should be, or how to figure it out.
That uncertainty can feel uncomfortable, but it’s also very common to feel this way mid-career. Often, it’s a signal: you are being nudged in a new direction.
So how do you start when you have no idea what you want to do next?
How to Navigate a Career Crossroads
Pause
It’s okay not to have the answers right away. Uncertainty is uncomfortable, but it’s temporary. Give yourself permission to slow down instead of rushing into the next thing.
Start Where You Are
Look at what is working in your current role. Is it the people? The industry? The flexibility? The clues are often right in front of you. Pay close attention.
Look at your life, not just your job.
Do you love working from home? Or do you prefer the energy of an office? Do you want to travel a lot, or the freedom to walk your dog midday? These details are important because they help you design a career that fits your life, not the other way around.
Find models
Notice people whose careers and lives you admire.
Ask yourself: What is it about their path that appeals to me? How could I take a step in that direction? If you know them, reach out and ask them about their journey and get their advice.
Seek support
You don’t have to figure it out alone. Work with a coach, talk with peers, or join a community of like-minded people.
The Opportunity:
Being at a career crossroads can feel like a crisis, but it’s also an opportunity. Many people who eventually find fulfilling careers went through a struggle like this. The key is to use it as a time to explore, pay attention, and take small steps toward what feels right for you.
